For decades she’s belted it out with Tacoma’s Best blues/R&B bands including the most loved Big Nasty along with monster Hammond organist Buck England and the late Jho Blenis on blistering guitar. Shelly has a fistful of regional awards and nominations including the Summy Award, named after legendary Tacoma DJ Bob Summerrise. ST. PATRICK’S DAY WITH THE BARE ROOTS
PLUS A VERY SPECIAL ACOUSTIC SET OF
IRISH MUSIC BY ANNIE O’NEILL
TUESDAY, MARCH 17th – 8PM

In 1965 rock ‘n roll reaches adolescence and became ‘Rock’, and Soul music ascends to dominate the pop charts and five junior high school friends form The Bare Roots. Modeling after the Animals, the band focused on covering British R&B and American Soul-Brits & Grits. They added some Northwest classic hits from The DynamicsWailers and Sonics, plus some classic Chicago blues to round out their sound by adding sax, harmonica, piano and organ. Their driving sound is seasoned and inspired as they start their fifth decade together. As a bonus, a VERY special acoustic set of Irish music by Annie O’Neill. This woman comes from a family of talented people and demonstrates her beautiful clear voice and guitar skills in various incarnations all over the Northwest, including this touching acoustic set of Irish tunes for this lucky green holiday.

THE JILL NEWMAN BAND
TUESDAY, MARCH 24th – 8PM

Vancouver based electric guitarist Jill Newman is able to squeeze out a raw, emotional sound, but with the technical skills to play tasteful Chicago style lead and slide guitar work. Michael Usinger, the editor of Vancouver, BC’s Georgia Straight says that Jill’s music “always lands of the right side of tasteful.” As a teen in Wisconsin, Jill discovered her love of the electric guitar, playing her Strat copy until she literally wore out the frets. She honed her chops touring throughout BC and Alberta, playing 6-7 nights a week in everything from country rock bands and original indie roots groups to all women punk and rock bands. Playing Jimmy Page’s blues inspired riffs in an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band led Jill back to her first love – playing the blues. And Jill is one of the Pacific Northwest’s finest female guitarists.

A new year means more opportunities to bring new events/live music to the Feedback Lounge, as well as introducing you to more of our award-winning craft cocktails, courtesy of Matt, Amanda and Jordan, three of the best mixologists in the city.

LIVE MUSIC
We’ve always tried to mix it up in terms of the live music we bring to the Feedback: blues, R&B, classic rock, nostalgia, tributes, hair rock, dance, soul, jazz, rockabilly and more. In 2015, we will continue to do that with never a cover charge. That’s the West Seattle way.

Looking ahead, we have the incredible Into The Cold returning, along with Kirk Dubb, Black Vinyl All-Stars, Gerald Collier, The Dusty 45s, Led Zeppelin tribute, Rippin Chicken (house residency here first Wednesday of each month), and an incoming slew of live album release shows.

Legendary Soul Band Comes To West Seattle

June 16, 2014

Septimus

The story of the legendary Seattle soul band SEPTIMUS begins in the family history of Septimus Brown, who traveled from Arkansas to raise his family in Seattle and continues with the release of Wheedle’s Groove Vol. II, which features tracks from Septimus from singles released decades ago.The band has never stopped playing together for over 40+ years.

Wheedle's Groove

In 2004, the first volume of Wheedle’s Groove shone a light on the formerly unheralded soul scene in 1960s and ‘70s Seattle, followed by a new album in 2008, and then an award winning feature-length documentary film. The on-going Wheedle’s Groove series continues to present a vast chapter of the city’s musical heritage that has little to do with long-haired rock dudes with guitars. No – in the world of Wheedle’s Groove, platform shoes and pimp hats were the order of the day.

Septimus in the '70s

As the years unfurl in the tracks of Wheedle’s Groove Volume II, so does the recent history of American music, the songs tracing technological changes and social change, and music’s move from the club to disco as live bands moved aside for DJs. Witness Septimus, on the cusp of both, blending a live drummer with a Roland drum machine and cutting “Here I Go Again” on a disco-friendly 12” single.

It is with great honor that we welcome Septimus to the Feedback Lounge on Friday, June 20th – 9PM for a free show. Come see these iconic soul/funk masters at work.
