Vintage Cocktails

Vintage Cocktails

I pulled a fast one on some super nice folks who think I was a good candidate to bar cater a party thingy where I wear a tie and make drinks from the 1920s and not spill purple stuff on myself and others.

In honor of what I’m SURE will be a triumphant vest wearing, your loving caretakers will make you 1920s drinks as well. Why is that interesting? Well, ’cuz you couldn’t even drink in this country in the ’20s, much less invent. AaaaaHAAA!

Here’s a couple vintage cocktails that talented people who aren’t me will make for customers who are you:

SEELBACH: Bourbon, Cointreau, Bitters, Champaigne

TUXEDO #2: Gin, Maraschino, Orange Bitters

HOTEL NACIONALE: Rum, Pineapple, Lime, Apricot

BEES KNEES: Gin, Honey, Lemon, Bitters.

Whee. Tonight. Etc.

The First Cocktail

September 18, 2014

Old Fashioned

Most people think the Sazerac was the first real cocktail. They’re probably very nice, but also super wrong. The first cocktail was an Old Fashioned, because a cocktail was defined as spirit, sugar, water, and bitters.

These days that covers a ton of territory as long as you don’t mind defining “sugar” as “booze that’s kinda sweet.” Which I do not.

So tonight Jordan and myself will make Old Fashioneds. Gin Old Fashioneds, Armagnac Old Fashioneds with grapefruit liqueur, Agricole Rhum Old Fashioneds with apple hooch… And even regular Old Fashioneds like you’re used to them.

Let’s get started about 6, yes? Yes. Wheeee!

Dropping Glasses

August 21, 2014
Dropping Glasses

So, yeah. Amanda’s moving or something, which I’m sad about. She’ll be here for a few weeks yet, dropping glasses and laughing inappropriately though, so take advantage of her goofiness while you can.

So: Here’s what’s being made exclusively for you. And by “exclusively you,” I mean everyone who comes to the bar.

That Weird Chill
Gin, Lemon, Breckenridge Bitters, Violette Liqueur

Manzana Fizz
Rye, Calvados, Lemon, Cointreau, Soda.

Blackthorn Buzz
Gin, Sipsmith Sloe Gin (this s**t is awesome, by the way), Vanilla Bitters

Damasko
Bourbon, Apricot Hooch, Honey, Cocchi Blanco Vermouth

See you tonight, 6ish, k?

This Week in Italian Apertifs

June 5, 2014
Negroni Week

It’s friggin’ NEGRONI WEEK.

There are literally eleventeen jillion cocktails we can make… And we can also make the real, original one: Gin, Carpano Antica, Campari. From there, replace Campari with Cynar. Or replace the Gin with Bourbon. Or replace the Gin with a rare Gin rested in Bourbon barrels. Or, uh, you know, other stuff.

We Love you tons. Promise.

Minted Cocktails

May 8, 2014

Mint Cocktails

I was gonna say my fascination with mint started with mint chocolate chip ice cream when I was a kid, but really? Doublemint Gum commercials when I was 13 is REALLY when it took off. If you’re old enough, that’ll make sense.

Now that I’m a booze geek, it’s hard to NOT put mint in more stuff. No muddling necessary, by the way. You can even use Fernet, Amaro, Menthe, and some gins to get your mint fix. So, yeah, let’s do that. Tonight around 7ish, k?

Thanks.

Big Perfect Gin

April 10, 2014
Big Gin

If you’ve heard me talk about local booze, you know it’s a mixed bag in my book. Some of it’s terrible, some of it’s good, and a few are outstanding.

Cuz it’s how I roll, I finally got around to buying one of the absolute best – Big Gin and Big Gin Bourbon Barrel Aged. I’m a nut for gin and theirs makes my arm hairs stand up and tummy sleepy. And the barrel aged one is the best locally made booze I’ve ever had, full stop.

So, we’ll try not to hack it up too badly by making some drinks with it tonight

Perfection is: Big Gin Jasmine: Big Gin, Lemon, Cointreau, Campari. Just sayin’.
